Nancy Morgan Barnes has been painting Maine since relocating to Searsport in 2001 with her husband, the painter Robert Barnes. Prior to that move Nancy's life was centered in Indiana, where she was born, educated, painted, and taught, including a decade teaching at Indiana University. She resisted any temptation to become a Maine painter who focuses on islands, light houses, and boats nesting in the sunset.
Barnes' observations of people engaged in ordinary activities have guided her painting for more than thirty years.
Barnes begins her paintings on site and completes them in her studio. Her paintings are not quickly rendered. She finishes only a limited number of paintings each year.
